Dawg 1991-2007
So named by my ex when he was drunk - the only one of the herd of cats to ever respond to "Here kitty kitty"
Dawg left us yesterday afternoon. She was the only one to test positive for Feline Leukemia and it had mutated into an easily contagious version so to protect the others, the majority of whom are less than 18 months old, Dawg was put to sleep yesterday.
It was heartbreaking - even though she went suddenly blind last week,(ironic as she was the only one of the cats afraid of the dark) she was learning how to get around the house just fine and gave every appearance of feeling fine. We wouldn't even have known she was sick if we hadn't taken her to the vet last Wednesday for her blindness...
We sweated it out until yesterday when the vet could make a house call and test everyone else. We had already decided that if most were already positive Dawg wouldn't be put down... each test was a mixed emotion - every negative test meant one more uninfected cat that was safe but one step closer to the end of Dawg's life.
She had 16 good years ---- we will miss her.
